Slide Man Slim & Penny Hanna - "The Weight" (Instrumental)
Here we tackle Robbie Robertson's "The Weight" as a harmonica instrumental, live in our project studio with live looping and pre-programmed drums. I fell in love with The Band as soon as their "Music From Big Pink" album hit the stores back in 1968 -- went to see them live several times back then and their music has stuck with me through the years. This particular tune has been covered by many, so there are some great versions out there. My favorite (of those I've heard) is still the version from The Band's "Last Waltz" album, performed with The Staples Singers (If Mavis Staples' vocal on that cut doesn't send chills down your spine, you may not be human :-)). So, this ain't that, just our humble take on it. - Slim

The composer and viol player Tobias Hume (c. 1579 - 1645) was also a soldier who traveled away from his native Scotland to the continent. Here is his "Pollish Villanel", a light hearted composition for solo lyra viol, perhaps inspired from the Italian 16th century Villanella. Thanks Dave! Interesting question :-), It's an actual harmonica, not a DM48. In this video I'm playing a Kongsheng Lyra Gold chromatic, but I have an audix M1250B mic attached to the back and that's covered by a homemade thingy to simulate hand cupping around the mic (I used to use my hands for this, but after all these years my shoulders started to not like that approach).
@@SlideManSlim I was wondering what chrome you are using here and am surprised you are using a KongSheng Lyra. I have a Lyra too which I like although i find it bright, so you must have EQ’d the harp, or perhaps the “thingy” you have attached to the mic to simulate cupping is helping with the mellow tone?
@@My2be4u I do use some EQ (usually just pulling down the high mid's a bit), but I've never found the Lyra Gold to be particularly bright compared to my other harps (and I have quite a few!). Cupping (either hand or simulated) does fatten the tone considerably, and even more so when cupping around the mic due to the proximity effect. One of the reasons I love recording with the Lyra is how little EQ it needs, it just sounds good (to me). Having said all that, as I know you know because you get a great sound when you play, most of the tone is in the mouth of the player.
@@SlideManSlim Thanks SLim! Yes that is true about tone and the player. But I am always looking for a little help to project that in recording or a band setting. I'm going to look into the M1250B mic, but perhaps I will reach out to you via PM to ask about the "Thingy" :)
@@My2be4u Feel free to continue the conversation elsewhere (email's good: slim@slidemanslim.com). As for the M1250B, I use it specifically for our "live" setup, since it's small and the mic must be attached to the harmonica so I can switch quickly between guitar and harmonica. It's not cheap and requires phantom power, but I like using condenser mics (for a little buzz in the high end) and it also can take very high sound pressure levels (so no distortion when put in close proximity to the sound source). For multitrack studio work, I use Peluso's U47 copy (large diaphragm tube mic) and I hand cup in front of the mic (which warms up the sound considerably).
